Overlooking the Mexican coastline in Puerto Vallarta we begin a family vacation with my parents & 3 brothers by investigating our hotel & nearby surroundings.
Not long after, we hop in the warm ocean waters to swim during the kind of sunset this area is famous for.
It seemed to last longer than a usual sunset. Maybe it did, or maybe there are just those perfect moments where our perception of time slows.
The next day the whole family swims & paddleboards in between games of volleyball. Over the years we've bonded over trips just like this.
At 90 degrees & 100% humidity the sea provided a refreshing escape from the heat.
After hours of poolside & seaside action, we relax inside our hotel room before grabbing some food & dancing at the hotel bar to live music.
At the bar we met some really rad people & formed a lil' dance crew. Each night we'd meet up after our own separate family activities.
The following day we embark into the Sierra Madre Mountains in search of a tiny isolated town in the jungle, but our van breaks down an hour up the mountain!
While we wait for another van to come pick us up, our guide shows us the wild flora & fauna of the area. There were trees with spikes & plant leaves that would actually move when touched.
An hour passes before our van arrives. Once on the road, we stop off at an old tequila tavern where everything is grown & processed onsite.
The agave plants are grown for 3 years before harvesting, no exception. This, along with their filtration process, enables a fuller taste & removes the notorious stomach upsetting qualities.
Now, tequila time! We sampled 6 varieties including classic & creamy blends. Their motto: "this tequila is so good its only for weddings, birthdays, & divorces".
The tavern felt isolated, in a peaceful way. No other sign of civilization besides the road we arrived on.
Alas, the real Mexico. This was the best part of the trip. We arrive in the center of San Sebastian, a small mountain town with an old church towering above town square.
While there, we ate a mouthwatering home cooked Mexican meal. It was so simple, made from animals & ingredients harvested in town like they have for centuries.
The whole town felt like a movie set. Its a near snapshot of the past. Being an hour from the nearest town, its grown somewhat isolated from outside influence. Family is still the bedrock here.
The beautiful architecture only furthered the feeling of being dropped in the past.
We even got to explore the tiny windowless prison. Little crime happens in this town, so it is more often used as a drunk tank.
Shortly after a young girl trotted down the cobblestone streets on a horse, eager to meet her friends at the basketball court. The different way of life was so cool to witness. Horses instead of bikes
Then we walked inside the church. Expert craftsmanship unseen in modern day buildings was on full display, harkening to a time before machinery.
The pure artistry of the interior was inspiring. Simply imagine the time spent carving the ornamental pillar edges by hand.
The whole familia cheerily chit chats as we wait to tour a family owned coffee farm.
As we wait, we're graced with another sighting of the young girl & her horse, this time she lets one of her friends take the helm as she guides the reins.
Typical of summer afternoons here, an ominous appearing thunderstorm starts to build overhead.
The coffee farm was beautiful. Family owned for generations, coffee grows amid houses, with dogs & cats wandering the whereabouts. Old pictures gave a small insight into life here.
Intermittent showers rained down as the thunder storm began breaking lose. Late that night thick lightning bolts zigged across the sky, followed by booming bangs of thunder.
We arrived back at the hotel just in time to eat dinner amid the sunset before the thunderstorm crept down from the mountains.
We lounged on the shore. I can't remember exactly what we talked about, but I remember feeling lucky & happy to get along with my family. We've grown closer through mistakes & hard times.
Family vacations are a priceless chance to share common memories with relatives. Years down the road you'll find yourselves saying "remember this & remember that?!".
The following day we embark on a guided river boat tour through some mangroves.
The waters were murky & muddy, hiding crocodiles beneath the surface!
The mangroves were filled with pelicans & 3 types of iguanas.
We even spotted a few of those illusive crocodiles! And they were huge!
After dinner we head over to join a free sunset yoga session.
In 100% humidity, sweat beaded from our foreheads, but the sensational sunset was the ultimate distraction.
Since it was our last night of the trip we met up with one of the friends we made along the way. Sometimes the people we meet are even radder than the places we go.
This family trip was personally really inspiring. My parents work so hard & getting to share such a special trip with them is something I will cherish forever.
